Boston Free Films - 5/13-5/20
Sorry for taking a week off last week... illness got the best of me (and it's still lingering).

Now we have to savor every free film opportunity as the usual providers of most of our free films are chilling out for the summer. The libraries and other non-profits will pitch in, but you won't have as many nights where you have to chose what free film you want to see. Since these may be coming from non-traditional sources, keep your eyes peeled for last minute additions.

Enjoy.

Check out my Twitter feed (@bostonfreefilms) for any updates.

Highlights:

* The BPL Copley Square Monday film series continues with "Baby Boom".
* The BPL Connelly Branch will screen "Locked Out" on Monday night.
* The Medford Library will show "Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North" on Tuesday night.

* MIT Amnesty International will screen "Cyprus: A Sad Island" on Thursday.
* The First Parish Church UU in Harvard Square will show "2012: The Mayan Word" on Friday. RSVP requested.
* Cambridge's Real Colegio Complutense Friday night series of Spanish films continues with "Blog".

MIT's LSC wins this week's prize for the cruelest tease of the year, so far. They announced a free screening of best picture winner "The Artist" for this week, only to cancel it minutes later. Ignore any notices about that film playing free for the near future.

Sign up for the Vinfen Moving Images Film Festival on March 31st at Harvard Med School. Looks like there is still space, but it usually sells out.

Spring Breaks at the local schools will start to interfere with schedules, so things may be a big sporadic on the campus scene for a while.

Enjoy.

Check out my Twitter feed (@bostonfreefilms) for any updates.

Highlights:

* Tufts Film Series will show "Big" today and take the next two weekends off for spring break.

Some weeks I think this is going to be easy, but I do my usual review of web calendars and discover there's a lot going on. As we end February and jump into March, I see a lot of activity including the Museum of Science Free Fridays, Women Take the Reel Film Festival, the Gleitsman Social Change Film Forum and the Vinfen Moving Images Film Festival are all coming up and really filled out the March schedule.

I recommend signing up for the Gleitsman Social Change Film Forum right away if you have time on Friday or Saturday. It will be quite popular and a great way to fill a day immersed in social film.

Enjoy.

Boston Free Films: Jan. 15th to 22nd
I was about to write about this being a slow week, but it really isn't. The nexus of the action is still MIT and their IAP (they are giving us Tim Burton, French and Brazilian films, even filmed lectures on physics), but there is still a decent variety of films. Soon all the schools will be back in action and we'll have more choices than we know what to do with.

Enjoy the lack of snow by getting out to watch a free film.

Check out my Twitter feed (@bostonfreefilms) for any updates.

Highlights:

* The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry Roxbury will host a screening of "The Letter" today followed by a full program of discussion and entertainment.
* The MFA will hold an open house on Monday with screenings of short films made by local youth. One screening will include the young filmmakers.
* MIT IAP offers a double feature on Monday in its Hacker Movies series with "War Games" and "Hackers". Tuesday's movies are "Sneakers" and "Swordfish".
* Boston Cares & City Year will screen "Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock" on Tuesday afternoon.
* MIT IAP Contemporary Brazilian Cinema Series will show "City of God" on Tuesday, "Elite Squad (Tropa de Elite)" on Wednesday and "Elite Squad – The Enemy Within (Tropa de Elite 2)" on Thursday.
* The IAP program of "Five Emigre Directors and the Rise of Film Noir" will continue with "Detour" on Wednesday afternoon.
* Another IAP film series, "The Life and Death of Tim Burton" will show "Batman" (Wednesday).
* Adding to the crowded IAP film schedule, will be five nights of The Complete Jacques Audiard from Wednesday through Sunday.
* BATV/Brookline Library Bibliophile Cinema series will show "The Commitments" on Wednesday night.

Okay...maybe I was away a little longer than planned, but it was pretty quiet out there. It's still going to be slow for a while, but we have MIT's IAP to thank for an interesting slate of movies and movie-related events.

For the uninformed, IAP is a month-long term where MIT's students are free to take classes and attend lectures on topics outside their primary areas of study. Lots of the content is just for fun. Officially, IAP is for students and staff, but some of the events are specifically open to the public and other organizers don't care (as long as the students get first shot). I've included most of the events where no registration is required. If the person in charge asks you to leave, please understand. Since MIT students don't have to be on campus until February, you'll find the earlier sessions sparsely attended.

And we have a few other film programs kicking off their years. Expect a lot of last minute additions when the usual suspects get back in gear.

Check out my Twitter feed (@bostonfreefilms) for any updates.

Highlights:

* The BPL Copley Square will host a family screening of "Gnomeo & Juliet" today.
* The first MIT IAP program is "Five Emigre Directors and the Rise of Film Noir" The schedule is:
"Double Indemnity" (Monday) and "The Woman in the Window" (Wednesday).
* The BPL Monday Night Film Series will focus on African-American actors and kick off with "Cabin in the Sky".
* The Winchester Library International Film Series starts with "Seducing Doctor Lewis" on Monday night.
* Another IAP film series, "The Life and Death of Tim Burton" will show "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" (Monday) and "Beetlejuice" (Wednesday).
* Also on Monday, you can see the best films from the 2011 MIT European Short Film Festival.
* On Tuesday, Local Sightings will host a screening in Brookline of films from the LA New Media Film Festival. RSVP required.
* Harvard Law School will host a screening of "I Came to Testify" on Wednesday with the filmmaker on hand. RSVP requested.
